devening projects + editions celebrates summer 2008 with Paper Love, a group exhibition showcasing drawing in its most inventive and energized state. Paper Love includes many artists from the NU community: William Conger (Professor Emeritus), Judy Ledgerwood (Associate Professor), Craig Yu (MFA 2006) and Jessie Mott (MFA 2009) among over fifty international participants. Paper Love runs June 29 - August 8, 2008. The opening reception is Sunday, June 29, 4-7pm. devening projects + editions is open Saturdays 11-6pm and by appt. " Who's afraid of Vladmir Tatlin?," Kelly Kaczynski (Assistant Professor) and Michael Rakowitz (Associate Professor) discuss the process of structuring space with Hyde Park Art Center architect Doug Garafalo on July 1, 2008 at 6-8 pm. Karinna Gomez (BA, AT&P, 2009) has been awarded a Weinberg College Summer Research Grant to fund her project," Printed Darkness: A Visual Novel Interpreting Insomnia." The grant consists of a stipend for research and living expenses towards production of the project for eight weeks in summer 2008. Craig Yu (MFA 2006) exhibits work in a four person group exhibition of works on paper titled, " Private Eye" at Hausler Contmporary, Munich, Germany. The show is open April 25-June 21, 2008. Professor Judy Ledgerwood exhibits a new group of paintings and site specific painting installation at Hausler Contemporary Zurich, Zurich, Germany, May 30-July 26, 2008. Matt Irie (MFA 2000, AT&P Department Technician), Jessie Mott (MFA 2009), Tim Mazurek (MFA 2008), Lisa Majer (MFA 2008) were included in the group show "The Vega Caucus" at Vega Estates, Chicago, IL, a one-night only exhibition served up with the VE's infamous homemade ice cream. Keiler Sensenbrenner (MFA 2002, PT Instructor NU, 07-08) has new work in a show titled, "The cuckoo then, in every tree," at the Portrait Society Gallery in Milwaukee, WI. Through June 28, 2008. Curt Bozif (MFA 2008) has a video titled "First In--Last Out" included in this years NU Student Film Festival at Block Cinema, Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, Friday, May 23. Reception begin at 7pm and screenings at 8pm. The films will be available in a Film Festival Compilation DVD free of rental charges at After Hours Video Store, Evanston. Vega Estates, the 1 Garage plus 1 Basement project space founded and run by alums Julie Rudder(MFA 2007) and Roxanne Hopper (MFA 2006) announces its Season Two calendar. One-night only exhibitions are scheduled for the second Saturday of every month May-Oct. A screening of localStyle's (Marlena Novak, Lecturer, collaborating with Jay Alan Yim) The Chicago Artists' Coalition has launched a new intitiative "Chicago Artists to Watch, " a yearlong effort to showcase talented CAC members from under-represented communities. Josue Pellot (MFA 2006) is one of three artists chosen to highlight the program. He will be featured in the Chicago Artists' Coalition monthly newspaper and in an interview on the CAC website. He will also conduct a lecture about his work at La Bruquena Restaurant, 2726 W. Division,Chicago. "Olympus Manger, Scene II" is the second installation in a continuing body of work, extending the artist's interest in the juncture between art, architecture, theatre and landscape. A public reception will be held from 6-8pm on Saturday, April 26, 2008. The artist will speak informally about her work on Tuesday, May 6, 2008. Christa Donner, (Adjunct Faculty, Silkscreen Winter 2008, Intaglio Spring 2008) has an upcoming solo exhibition in May 2008 at the International Museum of Surgical Science, Chicago, IL. Her work will also be included in the group shows "Outlaw Printmakers," Museum of Contmeporary Art St. Louis, St. Louis, MO, "Phenomena(l)," SPACES, Cleveland, OH, "Out of Sequence," Krannert Art Museum, Champaign-Urbana, IL and in the book publication "Tactile," published by Die Gestalten Verlab, Berlin. "Biological Agents," an exhibition she co-curated with biologist Andrew Yang, will open at Chicago's Gallery 400 Gallery at UIC, in September 2008. Paola Cabal, (Adjunct Faculty, Basic Drawing, Spring 2008) participates in The Art Institute of Chicago's Artists Connect Spring 2008 Lecture Series. In the series Chicago based artists talk about their own work while connecting with the work of artists of the past. Cabal's lecture focuses on her current work and the artist Vija Celmins. The lecture takes place May 3, 2008, at noon in the Morton Auditorium, The Art Institute of Chicago, 111. S. Michigan Ave, Chicago. Pamela Bannos (Senior Lecturer) launches a two-part project May 21, 2008. "Hidden Truths" is comprised of a site-specific installation with a web based component. Matt Irie (MFA 2000, AT&P Department Technician) recently launched an ongoing archive of his web based projects at www.poorhammer-sadsickle.com. Katherine Lampert (MFA 2006) is the recipient of a 2008 CAAP Grant awarded by the City of Chicago's Dept. of Cultural Affairs. Ryan Kapp (MFA 2002) has new work included in the group exhibition "Fresh" at Cerasoli Gallery, Culver City, CA. The show runs Feb 9-Mar 8, 2008. A solo show is scheduled at the gallery for April 12-May 3, 2008 with an opening reception on April 12, 6-8pm. Kapp has also produced an editioned silkscreen print titled "Chicago in the Fall" in an edition of 35. The print is available at The Beholder-an online marketplace for artists and will also be featured in Time Out Chicago magazine issue #162. Timothy Ripley (MFA 1998) exhibits new work in a show titled "The Contradictions," with Timothy Van Laar at NAB Gallery,Chicago. March 14-April 12, 2008. Marlena Novak (Lecturer) collaborating with Jay Alan Yim exhibit a new work titled Ryan Fenchel (MFA 2007) exhibits new work in two-person show titled "Around, Inside, and Round Again," at Roots and Culture Gallery, Chicago. February 15-March 15, 2008. Craig Yu (MFA 2006) and Professor Judy Ledgerwood both exhibit new work at devening projects+ editions. Yu's show "Zero Entropy" consists of recent paintings and drawings; Ledgerwood inaugurates devening projects + editions off space, a project space for special works of interest including site-specific and shows of works on paper, multiples and editions. For this first show, Ledgerwood will show recent works on paper and a site-spcific new wall painting. Feb 17-Mar 23, 2008. Danielle Gustafson-Sundell (MFA 98, AT&P Program Assistant) was included in "In the Beginning", a group show curated by Stephen Hepworth at the University Art Gallery, UCSD, San Diego. The show features contemporary artists from around the world who use text in their work. January 19-March 8, 2008. Professor and Chair Jeanne Dunning and alums Steve Nyktas (MFA 2007) and Craig Yu (MFA 2006) are included in "The Horror Show", curated by Deb and Dave Tolchinsky. "The Horror Show" is an exploration of pyschological and emotional terror, and our desire to experience it within contemporary art and media. January-February, 2008. Josue Pellot (MFA 2006) recently completed a large scale outdoor site specific installation in Puerto Rico at El Expresso de las Americas across from Plaza las Americas, the largest shopping mall in the Caribbean in December 2007. Ryan Scheidt (MFA 2005) exhibits new work in a solo show titled "The Swarming Sight II" at the Gillock Gallery, Evanston, IL, November 30, 2007, 6-9pm Aaron Hughes (MFA 2009) and other Iraq vets discuss the projects they have created to protest the war. In conjunction with the exhibition Consuming War at the Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago, November 25, 2007. Keiler Sensenbrenner (MFA 2002, PT Instructor NU, 07-08) was included in the group show "Girl on Guy: The Object of My Desire, curated by Marci Rae McDade in September 2007 at the A+D Gallery, Columbia College, Chicago and also in 'if that was all i needed i'd be fine' curated by Danielle Gustafson-Sundell at Kavi Gupta Gallery, Chicago, summer 2007.
