Shirley Tse's work, which includes sculpture, instillation, and photography is restricted almost entirely to the exploration of the symbolic, historical, and physical nature of a single material—plastic, a material infinitely adaptable, strong, durable, and cheap, “a material with no prior model that refers only to itself.” Tse's work has been included in museum exhibitions worldwide, among them are The Biennale of Sydney, Australia; Kaohshiung Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan; Museum of Modern Art, Bologna, Italy; San Francsico Museum of Modern Art; New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York. One-person exhibition venues include Shoshana Wayne Gallery, Santa Monica; Murray Guy, New York; Perugi Arte Contemporanea, Pardova, Italy; Pomoma College Museum of Art, Claremont; and Para/Site, Hong Kong. She had been awarded artist-in-residency postions at the Skowhegan School of Art, Maine (1995), Banff Center for the Arts, Alberta, Canada (1998) and Capp Street Project, San Francisco (2002). Shirly Tse is currently a member of the School of Art faculty at CalArts. |
